Crystal Meth in Sri Lanka: How It Spread Through the Country Sudden?

News Dec 18, 2022

The spread of crystal meth, one of the world's most dangerous and potent drugs, has caused havoc and devastation throughout Sri Lanka. This problem has been gaining momentum as the drug moves around different parts of the country and its use has been linked to a number of serious social and health problems. This essay will discuss the factors contributing to the spread of crystal meth in Sri Lanka and analyse the effects on society that this drug has caused. It will also discuss potential solutions that could be implemented to help combat the problem.

Crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as "crystal meth," is one of the world's most addictive and destructive drugs. In recent years, crystal meth use has become increasingly prevalent in Sri Lanka. Crystal meth, a highly potent stimulant, can cause serious physical and psychological damage, including paranoia, delusions, aggression, and memory loss. Inadequate prevention methods, combined with rising demand driven by restrictions on other drugs, and cheap and easy access through the internet have all played a role in the exponential growth of crystal meth use in Sri Lanka (APSARA Drug Prevention and Rehabilitation Foundation, 2021). Further, crystal meth trafficking has increased rapidly, with organised criminal networks playing a major role in its spread. In addition, youth are the most vulnerable to drug trafficking, especially those who are marginalised and left without economic opportunities (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 2021). This is why drug prevention and education are more important than ever, and must be taken seriously in order to address the growing crisis in Sri Lanka and beyond.

Crystal meth, one of the most dangerous drugs in the world, has been a major issue in Sri Lanka. The drug first gained traction when a man by the name of Jagath Samantha, sold it in large quantities with the help of a large team of associates ("CCDAC: Drug Czar"). He was eventually arrested and incarcerated, but not before large quantities of the drug spread throughout the country. In recent years, numerous arrests were made of people trafficking and selling large quantities of the drug, leading to further spread and progression of crystal meth in Sri Lanka ("Illegal Drug Trade Surging in Sri Lanka | Sri Lanka"). Furthermore, officials believe the increase of the drug is connected to organized crime operations, and illegal profits are being funneled elsewhere with the help of drug traffickers ("Sri Lanka Drug Situation"). As a result, the issue of crystal meth in Sri Lanka has become increasingly serious over the years.
Crystal Methamphetamine, also known as crystal meth, has become a major problem in Sri Lanka in recent years. The cost of the drug is low and easy to find, making it more accessible than other more expensive drugs. The proliferation of crystal meth has had devastating effects on the health, economic and social well being of Sri Lankans (Wanasinghe and Abeygunawardena, 2017). Furthermore, the ease with which the drug can be purchased, both domestically and abroad, has allowed for its spread more quickly, fueling the already existing problem that Sri Lanka is facing (Adikari and Jayasinghe, 2020). To help combat this growing epidemic, Sri Lanka should focus on public awareness campaigns and provide more resources to treatment centers and other services to support those struggling with addiction.

Methamphetamine, a powerful stimulant drug, has been rapidly making its way into Sri Lanka (Efrat, 2020). This influx of the drug has caused a dramatic increase in the availability of crystal meth (Kahandawa, 2016). The easy access and affordability of crystal meth has led to its phenomenal surge in popularity, resulting in a major problem in Sri Lanka (Williams, 2020). Unfortunately, the serious health risks associated with the use of crystal meth, such as strokes and heart attacks, are well known by those within the drug trade (Kaw, 2019). As the surge of methamphetamine continues to spread in society, the Sri Lankan government must step in to curb both the use and distribution of methamphetamine.

The spread of crystal meth in Sri Lanka was an unintended consequence of the global drug trade, and it has had a devastating effect on the country's people. While the government has taken measures to combat the drug's proliferation, it is still a major problem throughout Sri Lanka. Similarly, education is key to preventing the spread of crystal meth, particularly among children and young adults. Through increased public awareness, support for those in addiction, and strong drug laws and enforcement, Sri Lanka has a chance to turn this devastating trend around and ensure a brighter future for its people.
